Pat Head Summit Drive Road Closure

KUB and its contractor will close a section of Pat Head Summit Drive to thru traffic from Volunteer Boulevard to Todd Helton Drive starting Monday, June 22, and lasting through Friday, July 17, as sewer rehabilitation work is completed in this area. Construction activities will be restricted to daylight hours only. However, due to the ongoing presence of construction equipment and excavation in the roadway, this closure will be in effect around-the-clock for the duration of the project.

Appropriate traffic control measures will be in place to alert motorists of this closure. Motorists are advised to expect possible delays and use caution when traveling in this area due to the presence of workers and equipment.

Construction, Renovation Projects to Cause Campus Traffic Delays This Summer

A Knoxville Utility Board sewer line replacement project will close two lanes of traffic beginning April 20, 2009, on Neyland Drive from Lake Loudon Boulevard to Leinard Lane for four months.

The work is just one of several construction and renovation projects on the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, campus that will make it more difficult for motorists to travel through the area in the coming months.

The sewer line replacement project involves shutting down both eastbound lanes of Neyland Drive between Leinard Lane and Lake Loudon Boulevard as KUB workers extend a sewer line across the Tennessee River. The two westbound lanes of Neyland Drive will be converted into one lane each way for the duration of the work.

Access to UT facilities on Leinard Lane and Stephenson Drive and campus entrances at Joe Johnson Drive and Lake Loudon Boulevard will remain open as the work is under way.

The work is expected to be completed by August. Visitors to campus for spring 2009 commencement ceremonies will need to plan accordingly.

Between now and August, KUB also plans to renovate or replace many sections of water and sewer pipe below campus streets, creating temporary detours and adding to travel time around campus.

Here's an update on other projects and when they'll affect campus:

  • April to August 2009 -- Improvements will be made to Thompson-Boling Arena, including the addition of a pedestrian walkway from the G10 parking garage to the east end ramp of the arena. Staff lot 5 will be closed during this time.
  • May to mid-August 2009 -- Campus beautification projects along Lake Loudon Boulevard will include the construction of a new campus entrance way. This work will temporarily close staff lot 23 at the intersection of Lake Loudon and Neyland Drive.
  • June to August 2009 -- The Neyland Stadium Jumbotron will be refurbished, causing periodic closures of Tee Martin Drive and affecting most of staff lot 5 under the Gate 10 ramp. Pedestrians will be able to access the G10 garage and South Stadium via designated pedestrian passage ways.
  • Mid-June 2009 -- I-40 through downtown is scheduled to reopen.
  • July 2009 to March 2011 -- Staff lot 23 near the “Rock” will be closed permanently to accommodate the new student health center, which is being built on the site.
  • August 2009 -- Phillip Fulmer Way is scheduled to reopen following completion of the Neyland Stadium West Skybox Complex renovation.

Part of Phillip Fulmer Way to Close Dec. 1

A large portion of Phillip Fulmer Way will be closing Monday, Dec. 1 to accommodate the next phase of renovations to Neyland Stadium. The construction involves the west side of the stadium and will be completed in August 2009.

Phillip Fulmer Way will be completely closed from the Hearing & Speech Center to just before the KAT Bus Transfer Station. Access to the transfer station will not be affected. The closure also includes the east end of Peyton Manning Pass and the intersection at Peyton Manning Pass and Phillip Fulmer Way.

Beginning Dec. 1, the west end of Peyton Manning Pass will serve two-way traffic to accommodate motorists parking at the north end of Staff Lot 30, adjacent to the Hearing & Speech Center.

Peyton Manning Pass also will serve the south entrance/exit of Staff Lot 9. Faculty and staff who park in Staff Lot 9 and exit from the south will need to leave campus by way of Peyton Manning Pass and Volunteer Boulevard beginning Dec. 1.

Commuter students who use the G-10 garage will not be able to travel north on Phillip Fulmer Way to enter or exit the garage. Students using the G-10 garage are encouraged to use the entrance and exits from Neyland Drive to avoid anticipated heavier traffic on the portion of Phillip Fulmer Way that will remain open in front of Thompson Boling Arena.

Pedestrians who normally travel north or south on Phillip Fulmer Way will be diverted to Circle Park Drive, Volunteer Boulevard or the alley parallel to Staff Lot 9 – known as Margaret’s Alley.

Stairs are being expanded at the northern entrance to Staff Lot 30 (from Phillip Fulmer Way) behind the Communications & University Extension Building to accommodate people walking north. Pedestrians may use the stairs to reach Circle Park Drive and Volunteer Boulevard.

Three of the “T” bus routes and one main KAT route to campus also will change. The “T” North-South route will be modified the most by no longer serving the G-10 garage. For specific route changes, effective Dec. 1, visit http://www.ridethet.com/ or call 974-4080.
